Phone mounted on a tripod for stability
Long exposure photography allows you to capture the passage of time in a single frame, adding a dramatic sense of motion to your images. Whether you are shooting a cascading waterfall, a glowing cityscape, or the rush of a busy street, this technique creates a beautiful flow. You do not need expensive equipment to achieve this look; you can create stunning long exposure photos directly with your iPhone.
Start by finding a perfectly stable surface or mounting your iPhone on a tripod. This stability is the most critical foundation for a successful long exposure shot. If the camera moves even slightly during the process, the final image will be unintentionally blurry, so keeping it locked down is essential.
Open your Camera app and look immediately to the top right corner of the screen. You will see the “Live” icon; make sure it is toggled on effectively. This feature records the moments before and after you take the picture, which provides the data needed to create the long exposure effect later.
Once you are in Live mode, pay attention to the yellow icon displayed at the top of the screen. This icon represents the length of time the shutter will remain open for your capture. You can tap this icon to view a list of preset times or swipe left and right to manually adjust the exposure duration.
Before you commit to the shot, you should refine your focus and lighting conditions. Tap the screen on your subject to lock the focus point, indicated by a yellow square. Once focused, you can slide your finger up or down on the screen to brighten or darken the exposure to your preference.
After snapping your photo while keeping the phone still, head over to your Photos app. Select the image you just took and tap the drop-down menu located in the top left corner. Choose “Long Exposure” from the options to instantly transform your still photo into a dynamic image with motion blur.
This method is an excellent way to elevate your mobile photography, turning standard scenes into artistic expressions of movement. Whether capturing water or light trails, the long exposure setting helps visualize the flow of the environment. Give it a try to see how it changes your perspective on everyday scenes.
